Former Sheffield cinema goes up for sale, with £200,000 price tag

The old Wincobank Picture Palace on Merton Road is up for sale with a price tag of £199,000.

The impressive double-storey brick building dates back to 1914. The cinema closed in 1960 and the property has recently been used as a plumbers’ merchants but the mosaic tiled floor from its days as a picture house is understood to remain intact.

The building is listed for sale by Colloco and is described in the sales brochure as a ‘unique period property’ which is currently used as a trade counter but is ‘suitable for alternative uses’.

According to this brief history, the cinema opened in June 1914 and originally boasted 550 seats before the addition of a balcony boosted capacity by around 100.
