Plans approved for 500 new homes transforming ex-brewery site into new neighbourhood
Plans have been approved to transform Sheffield’s historic Cannon Brewery into a new neighbourhood
A former Sheffield brewery site that has stood empty for more than 20 years is set to be transformed into a new neighbourhood after plans were approved.

The redevelopment of the Cannon Brewery site in Neepsend has been given the green light, paving the way for hundreds of new homes, independent businesses, cafés, bars and public green spaces.
The 4.2-acre site, which was once home to Stones Brewery, will be turned into a mixed-use development by regeneration company Capital&Centric.
The first stage of the project will see 240 new apartments built, with the wider plans expected to create around 500 homes in total.
Alongside the housing, the scheme will include space for small businesses, artists and makers, with around 15,000 sq ft of commercial space planned.
Developers say the aim is to create a place where people can not only live, but also work and socialise, while keeping the industrial character of the historic brewery site.
The plans include a new urban park, pedestrian routes and public spaces - opening up an area which has been closed off from the community for decades.
Future residents will also have access to shared facilities including a gym, co-working spaces, a residents’ lounge and a private cinema.
The approval comes after the site recently welcomed Sheffield’s first indoor padel club, with Club de Padel already bringing activity back to Cannon Brewery ahead of the wider redevelopment.
John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said the approval marked an important step in bringing the historic site back into use.
He said: “This place has been part of Sheffield’s story for generations and we are excited and proud to give it a new lease of life.
“We are creating a new neighbourhood in one of Sheffield’s fastest-growing districts whilst celebrating heritage and history with hundreds of new homes, green public spaces, vibrant workspace and somewhere people can live, work and socialise.”
The Cannon Brewery project is part of wider regeneration work by Capital&Centric, which is currently transforming former industrial sites across the UK.
The company said the development would help continue Neepsend’s recent revival while preserving links to the area’s brewing and manufacturing past.
