Ken Lovejoy, who owns the pub and off licence, said the attack was ‘senseless vandalism’.

Posting on Facebook, he said: “2020 - that year we'll talk about.

“Some things are sent to test us, but the Phoenix rises from the ashes. We will come back back stronger, no fear.”

Mr Lovejoy, who has owned the business for two years, said: “I just feel numb about this really.

“Covid is bad enough then this, but this will just be a temporary set-back and once this is dealt with I will still have to deal with the restrictions facing the pub industry, so this vandalism does not feel too much of a burden in comparison.

“This will be sorted soon but Covid is not going anywhere for the next six months.”

South Yorkshire Police said: “An investigation into criminal damage is underway following reports of a property in Crookes being vandalised on October 18 at 2.20am.“It is reported that the windows of the property were smashed but offenders did not gain entry to the building.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident 114 of October 18.
