Nine months to the day after a young man was shot dead at a car wash in Sheffield, his killer is still roaming the streets.

Lamar Leroy Griffiths was sat in his friend’s car at the Diamond hand car wash in Burngreave on Tuesday, March 29 when a gun was fired at the BMW. Bullets penetrated the windscreen and 21-year-old Lamar was fatally wounded. Nobody has been charged yet over the shooting.

Lamar’s mum, Monique Bate, said he was on his way to visit his grandmother on the day of the attack and was not the intended target of the bullet which claimed his life.

Since her son’s death, Monique has channelled her time and efforts into ‘Lamar’s Legacy’, an initiative she hopes will help reduce street violence and give hope and a better future to young people.

Launching the scheme, Monique said: “My heart breaks for all the lives lost and all the generational reoccurring issues we face today; for example the inability to recognise the unique talent of young men in our community, we must focus on the elevation of young males regardless of race.

“My aim is to maintain and support the continuing efforts of those who are trying to raise community issues, having those difficult conversations we try to avoid having as a society.

“We need more focus on the reasons behind the actions of young men, the disconnect of self worth and the indoctrination of gang related violence as being a normal act of the male society, the more we avoid the more deep underlying problems that effect our society today the more we are in denial that there is an issues to resolve.

“The lack of support for young males is a profound problem that needs to be addressed. We grow through what we go through and I will continually work on making a better future for us all. I will continue to carry Lamar’s name and protect the beautiful energy he left behind.”

Anyone with information about the murder should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting the incident number 774 of March 29.
