Milburn: Sheffield indie rockers' intimate free gig in Neepsend with appearance by Arctic Monkeys' Jamie Cook

Sheffield indie rock band Milburn played an exclusive, intimate homecoming gig for fans on Saturday - and even drew an Arctic Monkey in for the night.

The show at Yellow Arch Studios on July 13 was a free gig with tickets only up for grabs from a ballot.

Billed as a “heartfelt thank you to the great people of Sheffield,” the intimate setlist comes ahead of the boys’ appearance at Don Valley Bowl this summer for their biggest-ever headlining performance at Rock N Roll Circus.

Front man Joe Carnall said: “Yellow Arch holds a special place for the band - it was where some of those early tunes were written and rehearsed. To be able to come back and play in front of an intimate crowd is really special.”

Photos from the night show they band’s fans even include Arctic Monkeys’-own Jamie Cook, who was pictured enjoying a drink before the show.

Milburn began with long-term friends Joe Green, Tom Rowley, and Louis Carnall, who played football together for many years before they decided to form a band.

Inspired by their hometown and their passion for football, they recorded the three-track demo “Steel Town” in 2001.

The band quickly gained traction, playing gigs around Yorkshire and the north, selling out shows at the Boardwalk, and impressing audiences in London at The Garage.

They self-released singles ‘Lipstick Lickin’ and ‘Showroom’ under their own label, Free Construction, before being signed by Mercury Records who released their debut album, ‘Well Well Well’ in 2006.

Milburn returned with their second album, ‘These Are The Facts’, in 2007, which was supported by a UK tour. In 2008, the band decided to explore other musical avenues and parted ways after farewell shows at ABC Glasgow and Sheffield's Carling Academy.

In 2016, the band reunited to celebrate the tenth anniversary of ‘Well Well Well’, initially planning four shows at the O2 Academy Sheffield.

The positive response from fans led to an autumn tour and the release of the double A-side ‘Midnight Control / Forming of a Fate,’ produced by Bill Ryder-Jones. They collaborated again with Ryder-Jones for their third and final LP, ‘Time’, released in 2017.

The show at Yellow Arch was presented by Rock N Roll Circus.
