Cole Brothers: Evicted Leadmill nightclub operator moves to former department store for disco

A legendary Sheffield nightclub operator is teaming up with the city’s top artist to host a disco in its most famous former shop.

The Leadmill is working with Pete McKee to run a Christmas disco night at Cole Brothers.

Youth Club Disco will see artist Pete play four hours of chart-topping hits, aiming to rekindle memories of youth clubs in the 70s and 80s.

The venue is the former John Lewis department store, previously called Cole Brothers, which has “always meant so much to the city,” the blurb states.

The event comes after the Leadmill business was forced to leave its nightclub premises after 45 years.

In September, Leadmill Ltd, led by director Phil Mills, lost a three-year eviction battle with Electric Group, which had bought the Leadmill Road building from where it operated, in 2017.

John Lewis closed with the loss of 299 jobs in 2021.

Last year, developer Urban Splash was granted a 250-year lease for the former departments store from owner Sheffield City Council.

In September, it submitted a planning application seeking permission to change and upgrade the former store for use as offices ‘underpinned by active ground floor and cultural uses’.

The Leadmill disco event is to be held on Friday, December 12.
