How famous Sheffield music site linked to Arctic Monkeys could look if expansion approved

Planning application has been filed to build extension

A well used Sheffield music site, linked to the Arctic Monkeys, looks set to expand.

Bosses at the Crystal Ship studios, on Burton Weir Works, Warren Street, near Attercliffe, have submitted a planning application to add more room to their premises, amid a reported shortage of space for musicians in the city.

The venue has operated as a music rehearsal and recording facility for 16 years, in a former engineering building

A report put together by the venue to go with its planning application states: “Over this time, it has become a well-established and highly regarded hub for musicians in Sheffield and the wider region, providing three recording studios and 15 rehearsal rooms, all of which are rented out on a rolling monthly basis to musicians/bands and operate at full capacity.

“The facility has never had vacant rooms and has maintained a waiting list of prospective users, which currently stands at around 10, demonstrating sustained unmet need for additional rehearsal space.”

It added: “The studio has played a significant role in supporting both established and emerging talent, with links to acts including Arctic Monkeys, Richard Hawley, Reverend and the Makers, The Vaccines and TeeDee, as well as producer Ross Orton. This demonstrates the site’s valued contribution to Sheffield’s cultural life and wider creative economy.”

The plans would build an extra floor on part of the site, for more rehearsal rooms, if they are approved. The plans have been submitted to Sheffield Council.

Because it is close the M1, it is often used by touring bands as well as local ones, the report stated.

Sheffield has produced a proud list of famous bands and musicians over the decades, including Def Leppard, Human League, Pulp and Arctic Monkeys.
