York City chairman offers punchy response to Sheffield Wednesday striker bid report
Sheffield Wednesday are linked with a York City striker.
A League Two chairman has offered a punchy public response to reports that Sheffield Wednesday have lodged a transfer bid for their star striker.
The Star has reason to believe Yorkshire-born York City forward Josh Stones is among the players they have given some consideration amid a major squad rebuild at S6. The 22-year-old is now credited with being the subject of a ‘significant bid’ from Wednesday in reports published on Monday evening.
Stones is a player Wednesday have monitored previously, The Star understands, with him having come through the ranks of non-league Guiseley and representing England Schools before making the switch to Wigan Athletic in 2022. Successful loan stints with Oldham Athletic followed before he made the permanent move to the Minstermen January last year. Some 26 goals and eight assists have followed in his 63 appearances for the recently promoted side.
In April he hit headlines and blitzed social media when he got the goal at Rochdale in the 13th minute of stoppage time to confirm York’s place back in the Football League after a decade.
Interestingly, York’s colourful chairman Matt Uggla responded to the report on social media, replying: ‘Not enough money in the world to buy our mythical creature’. The message was followed by a ‘red cross’ emoji.
Amid reports of interest from Barnsley and Hibs in January, Uggla took a similar tact, first posting ‘Pete you’re getting boring now. No one’s touching my sweet ginger buffalo,’ and later ‘Categorically not happening! I’m sure there’s interest. I’m interested in Dua Lipa, doesn’t mean I’m getting her.’
As per reports, Stones’ former club Wigan hold a ‘first refusal’ clause in the terms of the deal that saw him move to York for a fee of around £300k, meaning their bid would have to be accepted should any bid be accepted. Stones is said to be under contract with York until 2028.
