Sheffield Wednesday on striker hunt - Owls stance on Huddersfield Town man linked with Blackburn Rovers

Sheffield Wednesday’s recruitment team are in action mode.

The cogs are whirring in Sheffield Wednesday’s recruitment department as the club looks to rebuild their squad heading into a vital season. The bulk of the Owls’ squad will report to Middlewood Road on Wednesday for a testing stage before the start of what is expected to be a gruelling programme starting from next week.

It’s no secret that a great number of players will join the squad along the way - across more or less every position. Wednesday struggled in attacking areas in a brutally difficult campaign last time out and have sought to bring in quality at the top end of the pitch, with reports including that of The Wednesday Word suggesting Colchester United attacker Kyreece Lisbie is to choose to stay down south with a switch to Reading.

The links keep coming though and as reported by Football Insider, The Star understands the Owls do have an interest in Huddersfield Town striker Joe Taylor - though things are not believed to have progressed far beyond that stage as things stand. Championship side Blackburn Rovers are also credited with an interest in the 23-year-old former Wales youth international.

Taylor has an interesting career to date, coming through non-league and Peterborough United as a teenager before a stint with Luton Town saw his goalscoring record take off on loan with Colchester United and Lincoln City - where he scored 10 goals in 19 league appearances in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign.

That stint was halted when Huddersfield Town took him on a deal worth a reported £3m. His time in West Yorkshire hasn’t returned the goals he may have wanted but an excellent spell on loan with Wigan Athletic last season saw him bag 11 goals across 22 outings.

Amid interest in a host of other potential targets, Wednesday’s frontline is in need of new blood with discussions ongoing.

Jamal Lowe and Ike Ugbo are the club’s senior strikers heading into next season, with The Star of the understanding that an exit for Ugbo is possible should all parties agree a workable way forward. Charlie McNeill remains under contract as does Olaf Kobacki, who is understood to be of interest to clubs in Europe including his homeland in Poland. Youngsters George Brown and Will Grainger are the subject of contract discussions, with Grainger’s deal all but agreed.
