But it is looking increasingly likely that their first competitive fixture of the 2020/21 season will take place earlier than that, with September 5 being touted as the potential kick-off date for the Carabao Cup first round.

However, that weekend has already been outlined as an international break weekend, meaning Championship clubs would ordinarily have to rearrange games, with matches set to be arranged as early as August 29 in that case.

The Star understands that the EFL were keen to start the league schedule on that date as they attempt to navigate a manic season ahead of the European Championships next summer. Clubs voted for the September 12 date, allowing for more preparation and to allow for more potential for supporters to be allowed back into stadiums sooner.

Of Wednesday’s current cohort only Liam Palmer is likely to be involved in senior international football this season and it is unknown whether the EFL would liaise with clubs to allow them the option of playing their respective fixtures on September 5 regardless of any international absentees.

An August 29 start date would mean there are would be just 18 days left for clubs to prepare for the season. It is likely that several clubs would simply treat any Carabao Cup fixture as an additional friendly.

Wednesday will not be travelling abroad as usual this pre-season and will instead enjoy a five-day training camp at Loughborough University beginning September 24. They will play no more than two friendlies.
