Owls boss Garry Monk once again made 11 changes to his league side but left out Alex Hunt and new face Korede Adedoyin from the 18 that travelled, leaving them two light on the bench.

Hunt, who Monk confirmed would have started the match, picked up a knock to his knee in a late training session and made way for debutant Liam Waldock, while Adedoyin’s registration paperwork is still with the EFL despite assurances it would be complete in time for the clash.

On the registration of the former Everton forward, who warmed up with the side regardless, Monk said: “We were hopeful it would be done in time for tonight’s game, even last week’s game, but that’s for us to be told. We’re waiting for the EFL to sign it off.

“I was told it was going to be done today, but hopefully it’s done tomorrow or the next day.

“Everything is with the EFL. We expeted it today right up to lunchtime. We’ve been assured it’s imminent, it’s not the club’s issue it’s the EFL and they’ve told us it’ll be done ASAP.”

Monk is hopeful young midfielder Hunt will be fit for the trip to Bristol City on Sunday despite his knock. The youngster was seen moving pain-free prior to the match and seemed in relaxed mood.

“He’s got a knock to the knee and he felt a bit stiff this morning when he got up,” Monk confirmed.

“He’s travelled with us, but there’s no need to risk him. He was desperate to play and is doing really well but he had that knock so we didn’t want to risk it. I was confident with Liam coming and I thought he was excellent.

“We tried to give Alex as long as possible and he probably could have played at a push but there’s no point in risking it.

On the defeat itself, Monk said he was happy with his side’s efforts in the Carabao Cup this season, adding: “I don’t think there was any shame in the performance at all. I think we were competitive for large parts of it.”
