Why Sheffield Wednesday boss is confident style of play will get 'better' after home performances criticised

The Owls sit second in League One

Sheffield Wednesday are ‘hungry’ to improve and their style of play will get better, says boss Henrik Pedersen.

The Owls sit second in the League One table after the first seven games of the season, with four wins, two draws and one defeat giving them a total of 14 points. Although Wednesday are nicely placed in the automatic promotion spots, there have been criticisms of some of their performances, particularly after drawing a blank in their last two home matches.

However, Pedersen revealed that a busy start to the season - including seven league fixtures and two cup outings - has meant they have not been able to train as hard as they would like because many sessions have based around recovery. But with an extended international break meaning their next league clash is not until October 10, the Dane is confident that performances will improve as a result of more time on the training ground.

Summing up the start to the season, he told The Star: “I think from the results side, it's really strong with 14 points after seven games. From behind the result, I think there's so many things we want to do better. This week (build-up to Stockport County) is the first time we have trained with intensity compared to when we were back in Budapest (in pre-season). Since then, we have not trained with intensity to make us better and to train who we want to be.

“Now, in the national team break, we can train some more. We have to take the next step to get more clarity. How do we want to do it on the ball? How do we want to do it in the pressing? Get the connection, get the relation stronger and stronger in the team, and then I'm sure that it will not only be the result, but from the style of play, we will also improve a lot.”

The challenge for Wednesday, and the hope, is that they can match-up good performances with positive results, particularly at S6, where they have failed to score in four out of five games in all competitions.

Pedersen added: “I think we are all very hungry to play better, but to create a result in this beginning, we know how hard League One is. We know how hard it is to create a result here at Hillsborough. Everyone coming there, very compact. It's not an easy job. Now we have time on the training pitch, and then I'm sure that how we do it, the style we do it, it will improve, it will be better, it will be more and more effective, more and more clear. And can we also then keep the good result? Then then we are in the right direction.”
