The future of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood looks to have been going only one way since his last outing in November last year.

The Republic of Ireland international, who has won the club’s player of the year on two occasions in 2015 and 2017, has been exiled from Garry Monk’s plans since late defeat at West Brom in favour of Cameron Dawson and latterly Joe Wildsmith.

Monk has maintained that the 35-year-old has been out with a shoulder injury since last taking the bench against Bristol City just before Christmas.

Asked about the future of Westwood following the club’s season-closing defeat to Middlesbrough, Monk told The Star: “There’s been nothing on the players that are contracted to the club at all from anywhere.

“I haven’t been focused on that as you can imagine for any of the contracted players, there’s been no information or anything said to me about that side of it.

“It’s an ongoing thing, we’ll see in the coming weeks what the potential situations might be for all the situations for what we might face.”

Monk has spoken a number of times about the squad transition needed at Sheffield Wednesday to a younger, hungrier feel, with the likes of Sam Hutchinson, Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri having moved on.

Fellow long-serving pair Atdhe Nuhiu and Kieran Lee face an uncertain future at the club ahead of the expiry of their contracts in the coming weeks.

Monk said: “If I’m honest I’m looking forward to that transition. Obviously we need to add, we’ve lost a lot of players as well as part of that process, so we do need to bring players in as we know and the club know

“We’re working as hard as we can to try and start that process and as I say, we’re looking forward to that.

“It’s what the club need, it’s what we all need and hopefully we can get the right targets to help the ones that are already here and we can do something more consistent and better than what we’ve shown in this second half of the season.”
