Time may not be up for Atdhe Nuhiu and Kieran Lee at Sheffield Wednesday, says Garry Monk

Farewell messages sent to Sheffield Wednesday forward Atdhe Nuhiu may well prove to be premature, with Garry Monk insisting there are further discussions to be had with the Kosovan.

Together with midfield man Kieran Lee, there has been huge doubt thrown over the seven goal man, whose contract at the club comes to an end in the coming days.

Speaking to The Star, Owls boss Monk paid tribute to the pair following their season-closing 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough but stopped well short of confirming either of their departures, despite a number of social media messages from teammates appearing to bid Nuhiu farewell.

Monk has described the need for a squad overhaul at Wednesday, with a large number of senior players having already left the club. Lee joined the club in 2012 and has played 217 times for the Owls, Nuhiu a year later scoring 50 goals in 277 appearances.

“At this moment in time we’re still waiting on clarification on a few things,” Monk said.

“I’ll be having discussions with Kieran and Atdhe, they’ve been fantastic in their attitude. They both extended their contracts which is great, they’re the two that did it and they’ve been fantastic with me.

“We’ll have to try to understand what we have to do moving forward with the squad and I’ll have those discussions with those two, so there is the possibility [they could stay on].

“Right now I’m unsure in terms of knowing exactly what we can and can’t do. Once that clarification comes through obviously decisions can be made.”

Asked whether the long-serving duo had indicated a desire to stay at Wednesday, Monk said: “Of course. Extending their contracts showed how much they were committed to the club and we all know what their history is with the club and everything they’ve brought to it.

“Of course there’s a transition coming and we need to bring that fresh blood into the group, but also we need to make sure we know exactly what we can do.

“It’s very important that clarification comes very, very soon and then those discussions will be had either way.”
