Sheffield Wednesday will do battle with Charlton Athletic this afternoon as they look to keep up their unbeaten start to the 2022/23 season.

The Owls’ last home game saw them score and concede three goals in a dramatic 3-3 draw with Portsmouth, but they then went on to pick up their first three points of the campaign with a solid 1-0 win away at MK Dons.

Today, as two former Premier League sides go head to head, they’ll be eager to keep up their fine run of form at Hillsborough, though they will have to do it without summer signings, Michael Smith and Akin Famewo, who have both been ruled out. Famewo, sadly, is going to be out for some time.

Sheffield Wednesday v Charlton Athletic - All the updates from Hillsborough

Key Events

  • Wednesday won 2-0 in this tie last season
  • The Owls are on an 11-game unbeaten run at home

Should have capitalised

Bannan’s dinked freekick finds Bakinson, he nods into a dangerous area in the box but there’s nobody waiting. Felt like a decent opportunity, that.

Excellent work to chase down his man as he was breaking through on goal. Used his body well and won a foul in a crucial area.

Crossed in, to nobody

Johnson puts a teasing cross into the box, but - not for the first time - there’s nobody able to get on the end of it.

Byers, Bakinson and Gregory all take to the field... It’s the end of the afternoon for Dele-Bashiru, Vaulks and Paterson.

Byers and Gregory both coming on here by the looks of it.

Windass makes a good run down the left before cutting inside. A block on his strike makes it an easy save for Wollacott.

Windass breaks after a Bannan header and whips a lovely low cross into the box, but a sprinting Callum Paterson just can’t get onto the end of it. Johnson picks up the ball afterwards but his driven cross is cleared.

Charlton break shortly afterwards, but their shot is fired wide.
