The Owls played well for large periods of the game and had they been a little slicker in the final third, had Ike Ugbo been able to get a cleaner contact on his first half chance or had Yan Valery managed to clear the ball that gifted the Clarets their lead, who knows?
But these are the fine margins in elite football and Wednesday will have little time to wonder with another home clash with Swansea City hot on the heels of this one. Here are our player ratings from an outing against Burnley that was both encouraging and frustrating in equal measure.

5. Pol Valentin - 6
Tracer bullet running up and down the right - he a bit of threat to Wednesday's attack. Burnley seemed to change their plans to quell his threat after he got in a couple of times in the first half. Off after the hour. | Ellis / UGC

6. Shea Charles - 7
Good at football. Made more tackles than anyone else on the pitch. Didn't have it all his own way in possession. Yellow carded. Off late on. | Steve Ellis / UGC

7. Barry Bannan - 6
Saw plenty of the ball. Radar on those killer passes was off but was still at the heart of some of Wednesday's good things. Off for a rest with 18 minutes left. | UGC

8. Marvin Johnson - 7
Delivered a swazzy cross from deep to drive a bullet through Burnley's defence and find Gassama - though it was crowded out. Won a couple of defensive aerials. Faded a touch as the game went on but a threat he remained. | UGC
