Sheffield Wednesday boss explains what he wants from his team against Bolton Wanderers in Carabao Cup

The Owls and The Trotters clash in the cup this weekend

Henrik Pedersen wants Sheffield Wednesday to show the ‘best’ version of themselves against Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.

The Owls finished pre-season on a sour note, suffering a 4-0 thumping by Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park on Saturday, in a lacklustre display lacking in attacking threat. A younger line-up drew 0-0 at Accrington Stanley earlier in the day. Attention now turns to this weekend’s first round cup clash at Hillsborough before the league season gets underway seven days later away at Leyton Orient.

After Oldham, Pedersen said he was ‘shocked’ and ‘surprised’ at the performance and he wants them to put it right against Bolton on Saturday in front of their own fans. It will be interesting to see how both sides approach the fixture, as it takes place before the league season starts. Neither manager will want any injuries, but they will also not want to be dumped out of the competition.

When asked about how Wednesday will approach it, Pedersen said: “We treat this as a game we want to win, it is the first game we play at Hillsborough, and we we want to show off our best side. And of course, we are playing for it. “

A young Wednesday side travelled to Bolton in the same competition last season, winning on penalties. But Wanderers are now a division above The Owls, having won promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

On Bolton’s pre-season, boss Steven Schumacher, told Bolton News: “We've had no major injuries to be worried about, nothing new that's happened in pre-season that's been an issue. So as far as pre-seasons go, it has gone okay. We are ready to move to the real stuff next week.

“We have to be better on transition and be more clinical. We've got to be more clinical, we've got to make sure we get shots on the goal. Obviously, if you bring the better players in, they're more clinical, more decisive and make good decisions as well so that will help that process too.”
