Sheffield Wednesday planning for Plymouth Argyle fixture despite international uncertainty
The latest SWFC news...
Sheffield Wednesday’s fixture against Plymouth Argyle during the international break could still go ahead.
The Owls’ games in the last international break were postponed because of the number of players called-up by their countries. A club can request a postponement if they have three or more players on international duty when a league fixture is scheduled.
Wednesday are due to host the Pilgrims on Saturday, November 14, which would be Dave Challinor’s first league match in charge. The expectation was that it would need to be rearranged because of international call-ups but that might not be as straight-forward a first thought.
Kieran Morrison has already been called-up by Northern Ireland. Yan Valery (Switzerland) and Harry Gray (England under-19s) could also get the nod. Ali Al-Hamadi (Iraq) is currently injured. Others such as Sean Fusire, Will Grainger and Jordi Liongola don’t meet the criteria for a postponement because they have not played enough minutes this season.
“There's still, I suppose, a little bit of uncertainty around the Plymouth fixture, but at the minute that looks like going ahead,” Challinor said ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup tie at Oldham Athletic.
“At the moment, that's where we're at. We'll learn more today, and we'll learn more over the weekend. Because even within the squads that have been picked, if there are players that are on standby lists, if someone picks up an injury and drops out, then they might well be called-up up. So, at the minute, we're preparing and we're prepared in terms of our schedule for next week, that the game will go ahead on Saturday.”
If the match did not go ahead, it would mean Challinor’s first league game in charge would be against Barnsley at Oakwell on November 20.
