You don’t have to go far back to find the Owls’ last meeting with Rotherham United, but it’s been over 10 years since facing Coventry City and we all know what happened when they last took on Wycombe Wanderers – away trips to these three are a pretty mixed bag overall.

Coventry City

It’s been more than a decade since Wednesday last faced Coventry, which was back in March 2010 when Luke Varney’s opener was cancelled out by former Owl, Richard Wood, in a 1-1 at the Ricoh Arena.

All in all there’ve been 82 meetings between the two sides over the years, with the Sky Blues having a slight advantage having won 31 of them to SWFC’s 28. That record is largely helped by a run of six wins in a row for Coventry against the Owls between 1987 and 1989, but of late it’s been more in Wednesday’s favour with just two defeats in the last seven games.

Wednesday’s biggest win in recent memory was a 5-1 thumping at Hillsborough in 2003 when Michael Reddy, Shefki Kuqi (x2), Paul McLaren and Lee Bradbury got on the scoresheet.

Rotherham United

The first meeting of the Owls and the Millers in 2020/21 will be the 40th encounter between the two teams since the first time they faced off back in January 1934 (Wednesday won that FA Cup tie 3-0).

You don’t have to look too far back to find the last game between the two, which was SWFC’s 1-0 win in August of last year in the Carabao Cup, which saw Atdhe Nuhiu spark scenes in stoppage time as he grabbed a late winner for caretaker boss, Lee Bullen, at the New York Stadium.

As things stand it’s 12 victories for Rotherham, 20 for Wednesday and 12 draws between the two, with the Owls having lost to their Yorkshire neighbours just three times in the last 13 stretching back to 2003.

Wycombe Wanderers

There’ve only been a handful of meetings between Wycombe and Wednesday over the years, but the most recent – in 2012 – is one that will long live in the memory of Wednesdayites everywhere.

The two sides faced off for the first time in 2003 in a 2-1 Wednesday win where Lloyd Owusu and Alan Quinn got the goals, and there have been just three more games since then – a 1-1 draw in 2004 and another 2-1 Owls win in 2011 prior to that famous afternoon in May 2012.

After winning at Adams Park, Wednesday welcomed the Chairboys to Hillsborough in the final game of the 2011/12 season as they looked to secure promotion back into the Championship. Thanks to goals from Michail Antonio and Nile Ranger, it was job done. Cue madness.

The away fans were hugely praised by Wednesdayites for the role they played in that day, and the two groups of fans will be looking forward to seeing each other again in 2020 – this time in the Championship.
