Pierce Charles is exciting about this current crop of Sheffield Wednesday youngsters as they look for another run in the FA Youth Cup.

The 17-year-old shot-stopper is in-demand at present, with The Star being informed that both Northern Ireland and England – both of whom he’s represented at youth level – are keen to try and get him to commit his international future to them.

The talented teen recently penned his first professional contract with the Owls, and this month he played his part in securing a spot in the second round of the cup, saving a penalty in the shootout to see off Burton Albion.

“There’s less pressure on you as a goalkeeper” he told The Star. “But you have to contribute - I feel I could’ve maybe got three of the penalties, but to get one was enough.”

The goalkeeper – who has trained with the U21s and senior team recently – also spoke about the current crop of U18s as they prepare to face Derby County in the next round of the Youth Cup.

He said, “There’s no limit on what this group can do in the FA Youth Cup this season, I think. We’re just getting better and better as we play more games together.

Northern Ireland’s desire to get Charles to join his brother, Shea, in playing for the national team has seen them hand him a chance to train with the seniors already – and he admits that having his sibling there has helped.

“It’s huge,” the shot-stopper added. “It’s a big confidence boost and a huge motivator - especially going up there with my brother as well.

“He takes me into the team and welcomes me in there really well.”
