The experienced Owls number nine has had a fantastic first season in Wednesday colours, but a spell out with injury impacted his goal return and his goal against Cheltenham Town was his first of the year.

But over the course of the season he’s never gone more than three League One games without a goal or assist, and he’s now just two assists away from 2021/22 being his best ever regular campaign in terms of goal creation.

Now, having got back on the scoresheet, he wants to add more in the end-of-season run-in – however insists that he doesn’t put too much pressure on himself these days, as long as he feels he’s contributing to the cause.

“I want to score every game… It’s nice to score however it comes,” he said when asked about his long-range strike. “I don’t score outside the box, so I thought ‘I’m going to enjoy this one!’.”

He went on to say, “I used to feel pressure when I didn’t score, but now it’s more about contributing to the team and making sure the team wins. Since I’ve been back I feel like I’ve contributed more than just scoring, so I’m happy.

“I want to score, every striker does, but I don’t get caught up in it too much because then it just affects your game and then you can start snowballing.

“So I’ve stopped thinking about it now - if I score, brilliant, if not then I just have to make sure that I contribute to the team…”

And he’s certainly doing that.

Only Barry Bannan (17) has contributed more goals and assists at Wednesday in the league this season than Gregory (15), with only his skipper (9) has managed to pick up more assists than the 33-year-old forward (6).

Gregory could become the first Wednesday striker to hit double figures in a league campaign since Steven Fletcher in 2019/20 if he grabs another goal against AFC Wimbledon, and he’ll no doubt be desperate to add to his tally if given the opportunity.
