Sheffield Wednesday to make decision on popular defender after surprise inclusion

Reece James won promotion with SWFC in 2023

A decision on what happens next with Reece James will be made shortly, Owls boss Henrik Pedersen confirmed.

James, 32, a promotion winner with Sheffield Wednesday in 2023, was a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up in Saturday lunchtime’s goalless draw at Accrington Stanley. The popular personality had been training with Bradford City earlier in pre-season.

Wednesday are short of left-back options, with only Max Lowe in the ranks, following Reece Johnson’s loan move to Eastleigh, so there is a gap in the squad.

“He trained with us,” Pedersen told The Star after The Owls were thumped 4-0 by Oldham Athletic in a second game later in the day. “At the minute, we only have one left back, and that's why he trained with us this week, so he also could help us for the game today. He has done a good job. “

Asked whether he will train with the squad again next week, Pedersen replied: “We are speaking tomorrow about what's happening for next week, so we have not decided this.”

James is popular with Owls fans from his previous time at the club, scoring the third goal in the remarkable play-off thriller against Peterborough United three years ago. He is respected for his fully-committed performances and whole-hearted defensive displays.

The defender has been at Rotherham United for the last two seasons but is a free agent after leaving this summer following their relegation to League Two.

“I know his character,” Pedersen added. “He's a top character. He's a top man. I know him really well.”

Wednesday return to action on Saturday when they host Bolton in the Carabao Cup first round.
