Sheffield Wednesday boss 'shocked' and 'surprised' after hammering by Oldham Athletic
The Owls lost 4-0 to Oldham Athletic in a friendly on Saturday
A ‘shocked’ and ‘surprised’ Henrik Pedersen said Sheffield Wednesday’s performance in their 4-0 pre-season defeat to Oldham Athletic was ‘far away’ from the standards he expects.
A strong Owls line-up were thumped by the League Two side at Boundary Park, offering very little threat, resulting in some boos from the away end and many heading for the exits early.
Pedersen, who said in a club interview that he was ‘shocked’, told The Star: “I feel like all the players, all the staff, all the coaches, all the fans, that it was not good enough today. It was far away for who we want to be and for the standard we are setting for how we want to play for all the basic things but of course also in just the general performance today.
“It was a surprise today because I have not seen this level before in the pre-season. We have just come from a really good training camp. We played against a direct team against Preston and here it is similar, but against Preston we matched the duels, we matched the second balls, we matched the intensity, and today we didn't. And of course, it surprised me. But I know we have it, and we will find it again.
“If it should come, it's good coming now because then we can learn from it, and we have to learn from it, and we will learn from it. So, so we don't like it's coming, but if it should come, it's good as coming now. “
Earlier, at lunch-time another Wednesday XI, featuring the likes of Liam Cooper and Moses Burstow, were held to a goalless draw by Accrington Stanley.
On the two games overall, he added: “I have seen 23, 24 players today, and they all got 90 minutes, and it was very important. And then I have seen a lot of performance, and there was good performance in the other game. Now we'll put everything together, and then we will find a strong start 11 for next Saturday, and then I'm sure we will see the boys back again with our identity for who we want to be. “
Pre-season is now over for Wednesday, who will now prepare to face Bolton in the Carabao Cup first round at Hillsborough on Saturday.
