Sheffield Wednesday 'learn' from Sunderland under-21 breeze with notes given
Sheffield Wednesday beat Sunderland’s under-21 side 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
A breezy, functional evening for Sheffield Wednesday saw them make it two wins from two in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy thanks to a 2-0 win over Sunderland’s under-21 side.
Goals in either half from Jaden Heskey and Barry Bannan won the Owls a match played out in front of 5,423 spectators at Hillsborough with a result that confirmed their place in the next round of the competition.
A first senior goal for Heskey served as the highlight and important minutes were undertaken by a number of players, with Owls boss Henrik Pedersen circulating his squad throughout the clash with a quadruple substitution flurry coming at half-time. Denny Oliver made his senior debut for the bench and there was a bright showing from Sean Fusire, who earned his first senior minutes since the opening day of the season having recovered from injury.
“It was another good win,” Pedersen said. “A 2-0, scored two goals, great. We had more chances to to do more at first half. That was very intensive with a lot of good high press, a lot of good interceptions. But we also had a vertical mindset when we won the ball, where we could have made more goals.
“Second half we started well, then we we stop a little bit with the verticality, but we saw every time we speed up the game and ran in front of the ball, deep run vertical mindset, then we could also create something. So yeah, good.”
The low-key nature of the EFL Trophy doesn’t always spark too much in the way of interest but allowed Wednesday to get more minutes in the legs in the final week of an extended international break. They make the short trip to West Yorkshire and Huddersfield Town on Saturday hoping to continue their unbeaten run in League One football
Asked whether he and Wednesday could learn anything out of the functional display on Tuesday evening, Pedersen said: “We can always learn, and we will always learn, doesn't matter which game we are playing. And I've also learned things tonight for sure.”
