Exclusive:Sheffield Wednesday set to sign versatile former Everton man after successful trial

The Owls are set to make another new addition

Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on another summer signing, with versatile former Everton man Tyler Onyango now fully expected to join the club on free transfer terms, The Star understands.

The Owls have been in discussions with the 23-year-old over the possibility of signing since he re-joined a training opportunity with the club following their return from a European training camp.

Onyango is set to become their 13th summer signing after the additions of Mason Burstow and goalkeepers Ashley Maynard-Brewer and Connor Trueman last week. The tall, versatile youngster can play in midfield and defence and has a previous relationship with Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson, who signed him to loan spells at Stockport County on two occasions.

The former England youth international featured in the Owls’ pre-season friendly run-out at Oldham Athletic over the weekend, coming on at half-time. When asked about the likelihood of the Owls pressing forward on efforts to sign him, manager Henrik Pedersen kept his cards close to his chest at the time.

The Star understands that while a deal is not yet complete, Onyango is all set to become a Wednesday player. It remains to be seen how quickly an expected completion of his signing could happen, though it is believed to be possible he joins in time to be put in contention for this weekend’s Carabao Cup welcoming of Bolton Wanderers - though it is not clear where his pre-season match fitness levels are as things stand.

Luton-born Onyango had been at Everton for six years and has had loans at Burton Albion, Forest Green Rovers and Stockport County. He actually made his Everton first-team debut against The Owls in the FA Cup in January 2021. He made five first-team appearances in total, including four in the Premier League. While at Everton, the former England youth international won the Keith Tamlin Award, an academy accolade which recognises excellence, with Ross Barkley among the past winners.
