Sheffield Wednesday-linked midfielder set to stay at Wrexham - at least for now
The Owls have been busy in the transfer market this summer
A Championship midfielder linked with Sheffield Wednesday is set to stay at his current club - at least for now, The Star is led to believe.
Wrexham’s George Dobson, 28, is thought to have been of interest to The Owls this summer. He won promotion from League One with the Welsh club in 2025 and made 40 appearances last season as they narrowly missed out on the play-offs.
The central midfielder, who has played for Walsall, Sunderland, AFC Wimbledon and Charlton Athletic among others, still has another two years left on his current contract at the Racecourse Ground, where he is a popular figure. With Wednesday working under an EFL-agreed budget, it is likely to be only free transfers and loans from now on for the time-being.
The transfer window is fast-moving and unpredictable at times, and things change constantly, so never say never, but as it stands right now, Dobson is set to stay at Wrexham, we understand. He has attracted Championship interest in the past month, we are told, so it remains to be seen what occurs in the latter part of the window.
Wrexham completed the signing of Preston midfielder, Ben Whiteman, 30, on Wednesday for a fee, agreeing a three-year deal, with the option for a fourth.
Twelve new faces have come through the door at Hillsborough this summer and more are needed to add depth to certain positions, including central midfield and forward areas. They currently have ex-Everton centre-midfielder, Tyler Onyango, 23, training with them.
The transfer window closes on September 1 and it could be a busy end to it at Hillsborough. Speaking previously about transfers, Owls sporting director, Simon Wilson, said: “There are patterns to it, isn’t there? I think people try to get their business done early as much as possible. Ours is an extreme case because we need so many players, so we are probably more active than most. As players come back and moves start to get made, there can be another round of activity, and there is obviously a lot more activity towards the end of the window. We are prepared that it might be messy for us this year. Everyone is cool with that, we’re going to work through it, we’re going to make sure we maximise the opportunities that we have got. We can still improve things as we build out this team.”
The Owls host Championship side Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup first round on Saturday.
