Wycombe Wanderers boss charged by Football Association following Sheffield Wednesday incident
Michael Duff was shown a red card following the conclusion of Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park last Tuesday night.
Wycombe Wanderers head coach Michael Duff has been charged for misconduct by The Football Association following an incident in the aftermath of his side’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Adams Park last week.
Duff was shown a red card by referee David Rock after challenging him following the full-time whistle, meaning the former Barnsley and Cheltenham Town boss was not permitted to conduct any post-match interviews.
Duff, who was appointed as the Chairboys’ boss a year ago, was visibly frustrated by two key decisions that went against his side in the second half. First, his side, who found themselves 2-1 down at half-time, had a goal ruled out for handball before they were denied a penalty when an effort from range appeared to strike Gabriel Otegbayo’s outstretched arm.
Wycombe first-team coach Alex Morris, who stepped up to conduct post-match media duties in Duff’s absence, described the two incidents as “deciding factors” in the game. He also claimed that Wednesday were wrongly awarded a penalty in first-half stoppage time when Chairboys striker Cauley Woodrow was deemed to have tripped Owls ace Callum Slattery inside the box.
Duff was visibly furious following the final whistle, resulting in him being shown a red card by referee Rock. He is now facing a charge of misconduct.
A statement released by The FA on Monday said: “Michael Duff has been charged for misconduct following Wycombe Wanderers’ EFL League One match against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday 1 September.
“It’s alleged that the manager used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official at full-time, leading to his dismissal. Michael Duff has until Wednesday 9 September to provide a response.”
Wycombe are one of three teams still without a win in League One this season, alongside MK Dons, whom they drew 3-3 with on Saturday, and Doncaster Rovers. The Chairboys are next in action on Saturday, when they face Leyton Orient at the BetWright Stadium.
