Sheffield Wednesday new boy on the brink of running suspension risk after latest caution

Callum Slattery was shown a third yellow card of the season in Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Peterborough United on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Callum Slattery is on the brink of finding himself walking a disciplinary tightrope after picking up his third yellow card in as many games during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Peterborough United at the Weston Homes Stadium.

The attacking midfielder, who has made an eye-catching start to his Wednesday career after arriving from Motherwell during the summer, was shown his third yellow card of the season in the second half of the victory over the Posh.

He was cautioned by referee Andrew Humphries for not allowing enough room for a Peterborough free-kick to be taken quickly, having initially been guilty of committing a foul on left-back Harley Mills.

Three cautions in Wednesday’s opening five games of their League One campaign mean that he must now tread very carefully to avoid a suspension. English Football League rules state that any player who is shown five yellow cards within their club’s opening 19 league matches must serve a one-match ban.

Slattery, who has scored two goals for Wednesday so far this season, opening the scoring against Leyton Orient and Bromley respectively, is one of six players in League One to have been shown a minimum of three yellow cards so far this season. Leyton Orient’s Isaac Hayden is currently the closest to being handed a suspension after being booked four times in his his side’s opening five matches.

Slattery is now tasked with trying to avoid being booked twice between now and the conclusion of Wednesday’s clash with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on December 10, which will mark the cut-off point for avoiding a one-match ban for accumulating five yellow cards.

Wednesday, who have claimed residency at the League One summit following their win at Peterborough, have received nine yellow cards in total so far this season. However, nobody other than Slattery has been booked on more than one occasion, meaning no other member of Henrik Pedersen’s squad is currently close to being at risk of earning a one-match suspension.

As per traditional EFL rules, the accumulation of ten yellow cards within any club’s opening 37 league matches will result in a two-match ban.
