Sheffield Wednesday confirm Simon Wilson appointment as transfer window opens

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the arrival of Simon Wilson as the club’s new sporting director.

Sheffield Wednesday have officially unveiled Simon Wilson as their new sporting director following the opening of the summer transfer window, marking another significant step in their rebuild.

Wilson has arrived at Hillsborough from Stockport County after spending just over six years at Edgeley Park, serving as director of football and then as chief executive. It was announced in April that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The former Southampton analyst is understood to have spent time at Hillsborough last month getting to know key figures at the club before being present more recently ahead of today’s announcement. it is understood Wilson’s hire required vetting by the Independent Football Regulator (IFR).

Wednesday have described the creation of a sporting director role at Hillsborough as ‘a significant step and reflects the clear strategic vision of the club’s ownership, both for the immediate future and the long term’. Wilson will lead the Owls’ sporting strategy and assist with building the foundations required for sustainable long-term success.

Former Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri never appointed a sporting director during his ten-year reign, meaning managers and backroom staff were left conducting additional roles.

However, new Owls chairman David Storch, ahead of his takeover being finalised last month, outlined his desire to build a proper football structure that would assist with his efforts to take Wednesday forward. Wilson becomes the second significant hire of the Arise era following the arrival of chief executive David Bruce last month.

On his arrival at Hillsborough, Wilson told Wednesday’s club website: “Sheffield Wednesday are one of the most historic clubs in English football, with a unique identity, a passionate supporter base and a matchday atmosphere that immediately stands out.

"The energy of Hillsborough and the passion of our supporters are powerful strengths, and I strongly believe successful football clubs understand their advantages and build around them. That energy and identity should be reflected in every part of our club - particularly in the team we build, how we play and the culture we create.

"Success will require patience, consistency and alignment. We are not looking for quick fixes, but to build a football operation capable of delivering sustainable success over the long term. I’m excited to get started and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Sheffield Wednesday’s journey.”
