David Storch confirms impending Sheffield Wednesday addition as transfer window opens
Sheffield Wednesday are poised to announce the addition of Simon Wilson as the club’s new sporting director.
Sheffield Wednesday chairman David Storch has revealed he expects Simon Wilson to be unveiled as the club’s new sporting director today (Monday).
Wednesday have been working on a deal to add Wilson to their off-field structure for a number of weeks and progress is understood to have gathered pace over the last few days. It was confirmed at the end of April that he would be leaving his post as Stockport County chief executive at the end of the 2025/26 season.
Stockport’s campaign was extended, of course, after they qualified for the League One play-offs. After beating Stevenage 3-0 on aggregate at the semi-final stage, they were eventually beaten 4-1 by Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley.
Confirmation of Wilson’s appointment will provide Wednesday with a significant boost ahead of this summer’s squad rebuild. The transfer window officially opened for business today, meaning the Owls are free to start work on their recruitment drive for the upcoming League One campaign.
Wilson, who has been the subject of vetting checks, is understood to have already spent time at Hillsborough ahead of his appointment being officially announced. He is set to have a leading role in Wednesday’s recruitment plans over the coming weeks and months.
Speaking at an appearance at the unveiling of a headstone for Ambrose Langley, who was the first Owls captain after their move to Hillsborough, at Burngreave Cemetery on Sunday, Storch said: “We have a lot of tasks in front of us right now rebuilding this club.
“This club was, as you know, not in great shape. We’re starting by building an infrastructure organisationally, and we’ve hired a great CEO - he’s phenomenal. He’s hired a Sporting Director, who I think we’re announcing tomorrow.

“He’s also top drawer, he was the CEO of Stockport, and he’s just a really good dude - Simon Wilson is his name.”
In addition to confirming the impending appointment of Wilson, Storch, who flew into England on Sunday morning, also revealed Wednesday are bolstering other departments off the field. As reported by The Star, Oscar Chamberlain, who is a former communications lead at Sunderland, is set to join Wednesday to fill a slightly different and newly-created role at Hillsborough.
“We have a new senior head of all comms, we have got a new finance director coming in,” Storch continued.
“We’re building an infrastructure organisationally. We are going to do the best we can to put the best team we can on the pitch this season.
“We know, at the end of the day, we can make Hillsborough the greatest stadium ever, but if we can’t compete on the pitch then it really doesn’t make a difference. We are very focused on that, and it is our top priority.”
