'We've seen them given' - Charlton Athletic captain questions awarding of Sheffield Wednesday equaliser

Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to earn a point against Charlton Athletic at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Charlton Athletic captain Greg Docherty admitted he thought a foul could have been given in the build up to Sheffield Wednesday’s equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.

After striker Matt Godden had given the Addicks the lead just four minutes after half-time, Wednesday got themselves back on terms with just under 15 minutes of the contest remaining when Gabriel Otegbayo turned the ball home from inside the penalty area to claim his first goal of the season.

The centre-back was in the right place at the right time after Charlton goalkeeper Will Mannion dropped Sean Fusire’s cross from the left and Jamal Lowe managed to get just enough contact on the ball to direct it into Otegbayo’s path for him to apply the finish from the edge of the six-yard box.

As Otegbayo wheeled away to celebrate, Mannion and his Charlton teammates protested to referee Thomas Parsons, insisting Nathaniel Chalobah had backed into the Addicks goalkeeper when he had tried to come and claim Fusire’s cross. However, their appeals were waved away and the goal was allowed to stand, ensuring Wednesday extended their unbeaten to three matches.

However, Addicks midfielder Docherty insisted post-match that he has seen goals of a similar nature chalked off.

“It is frustrating because we went a goal ahead and we never got the second,” Docherty told Charlton’s YouTube channel. “We conceded a goal that could have been a foul - we’ve seen them given a lot of times.

“It is frustrating, but we want to defend that moment better. Again, it’s the story like the last few home games, really, it’s getting the second goal and that is the bit we’re missing.”

Despite seeing Charlton strike the post through Sonny Carey after Godden had earlier given them the lead, Wednesday applied plenty of sustained attacking pressure in the second half, frequently bombarding the visitors’ box with crosses.

“You could see them today, they’re playing freely,” the Addicks captain continued, offering his verdict on Wednesday’s approach to the game. “That is difficult as well when see you players on the pitch and they’re playing with that nothing to lose mentality and are probably fighting for what they are going to do next year and where they want to be.

“Credit to them, but we had enough to go and win the game today. We had enough chances, enough clear chances, and that is the frustrating thing like it has been the last few weeks.”
