Major Svante Ingelsson update after Sheffield Wednesday sit-out
Wednesday were without their star man of the season against Charlton Athletic but he could be back soon.
Key Owls man Svante Ingelsson could return for the trip to Middlesbrough in midweek.
The Swedish midfielder, who is set to collect many individual awards at the end of the season, was not in the squad for the 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic on Saturday. His absence was not a surprise after Henrik Pedersen revealed he was a ‘big doubt’ because of a knee problem.
The club is still waiting to find out the extent of the issue but Pedersen did not rule Ingelsson out of the game against Boro on Wednesday night.
He told The Star: “He trained in the morning but we decided we will wait and see. Maybe he can play against Middlesbrough but we take it day-by-day. He has some challenges with his knee and we are waiting for the report from the doctor for how it is. Hopefully it is just some small things.”
As much as Wednesday would have liked to have been able to select Ingelsson against Charlton, Pedersen felt that Nathaniel Chalobah and Jaden Heskey performed well alongside each other in central midfield.
Pedersen said: “Of course Svante has a big strength in this part of the game. He is top quality but I think still we were strong in this phase but we have to put more power in the deep runs so we can really speed up the game.
“Svante has maybe been the best player in the whole season but how Jaden and Nathaniel played today was really strong. The boys know how we want to play but it was good to see Jaden and Nathaniel together. They were really strong on the ball today but they were also strong when we lost the ball. There were many positive things.”
Gabriel Otegbayo earned Wednesday a point after he struck with 14 minutes remaining to cancel out Matt Godden’s opener. The Owls have still not won at home in the league this season and they only have one more opportunity get one when they host West Brom on the final day of the season.
