David Bruce explains why Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Simon Wilson as sporting director

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Simon Wilson as sporting director, marking another significant addition to Arise Capital Partners’ jigsaw.

Chief executive David Bruce has described Simon Wilson’s appointment as sporting director as an “important moment” for Sheffield Wednesday, outlining what qualities he will bring to the role.

As part of Arise Capital Partners’ quest to implement a proper structure at Hillsborough, Wilson has been brought in to lead the club’s sporting strategy. He has moved to S6 following more than six years at Stockport County, helping them climb from the National League to the cusp of the Championship.

Serving as director of football and then as chief executive during his time at Edgeley Park, Wilson brings a wealth of experience and know-how to Hillsborough. Prior to working at Stockport, he spent several years at Manchester City in a number of senior strategic and performance roles.

With the transfer window now officially open for business, confirmation of Wilson’s arrival should trigger the start of Wednesday’s summer recruitment drive. The Owls are in desperate need of fresh blood this summer, meaning it is not unrealistic to suggest they could need somewhere in the region of 15 new signings to strengthen Henrik Pedersen’s squad.

Wilson, Wednesday have confirmed, will help build the foundations required for sustainable long-term success, meaning he is a key part of the jigsaw being put together by Arise, who are determined to strive for excellence across the board.

“Simon’s appointment is an important moment for Sheffield Wednesday,” Bruce told the Owls’ club website. “We are building for the future, and that requires experienced, high-calibre leadership at every level of the football club.

"Simon brings a rare blend of strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and proven operational leadership, having worked at some of the most respected organisations in world football.

“His appointment reflects our commitment to modernising the club, strengthening our football structure and building in a way that gives Wednesday the strongest possible platform for long-term success.

"We also recognise and respect the immense effort of everyone involved throughout an incredibly challenging 2025/26 season. The work ahead is not about disregarding what came before, but building on those foundations with greater ambition, clarity and alignment.”
