'The more you uncovered' - David Bruce details Sheffield Wednesday redevelopment after £9m spend
Arise Capital Partners spent around £9million on developing Hillsborough during what was a transformative summer.
Sheffield Wednesday chief executive David Bruce has revealed that ownership group Arise Capital Partners initially expected to spend £5million on improvements to Hillsborough ahead of this season.
Arise, led by Owls chairman David Storch, completed its takeover of the club earlier this year, rescuing Wednesday after a period of turmoil under former owner Dejphon Chansiri, who placed the club into administration last October.
The US consortium has overseen a significant turnaround in a remarkably short period, investing heavily in numerous areas of the club, both on and off the pitch. Hillsborough underwent extensive redevelopment over the summer, effectively becoming a building site as hundreds of workmen and tradesmen carried out projects designed to improve the matchday experience for supporters.
Ten to 15 years’ worth of work was carried out in around 90 days, highlighting the scale of the challenge that was overseen, and it cost Arise around £9m, meaning they spent significantly more than originally expected when it came to vital infrastructure improvements.
Once Arise and other members of Wednesday’s new-look hierarchy, including Bruce, were in place, it quickly became apparent that Hillsborough was in need of more work than originally anticipated. With that in mind, Bruce is delighted with how much work has been conducted in such a short period of time.
“We came in and thought we’d spend £5m, largely on safety, foundational stuff to make the stadium be a place you want to come to,” Bruce told The i.
“Flushing the toilets and not getting water coming through the roof. The ability to serve pies and pints in a decent way. But the more you uncovered, the more you saw something you actually wanted to work on too.
“Normally you would get things signed off in the budget at Christmas time, then finalise and start the work when you get to summer. We didn’t start thinking about this stuff until two weeks after the owner owned the club.

“There’s obviously still bits and pieces getting done. But to get all of that done before the start of the season… I can’t believe how much the team achieved.”
Among the many improvements under Arise that Wednesdayites have saluted has been the improved level of communication. The club frequently kept supporters updated on developments throughout the summer, while chairman Storch has been known to provide an update or two via his personal X (formerly Twitter) account.
On the importance of communication, Bruce added: “Let’s communicate and let’s communicate frequently. We’re still not where we need to be with certain things on matchday. So we articulate that in the matchday guide. We want to be very open and honest about that.
“I think a lot of clubs will understandably wait until they are almost at the mid-point of the journey.
“Well, we want to tell you about the journey now, because the journey is the most exciting part when you’ve experienced what these people have. It’s intoxicating; it might be a little bit messy at times, but that’s OK because we’re together.”
