Ali Al-Hamadi, Gabriel Otegbayo, Max Lowe and Sil Swinkels in Sheffield Wednesday injury latest

An extended international break has given Sheffield Wednesday the chance to bring injured players closer to fitness.

Sheffield Wednesday have fresh injury queries to consider as they continue through the international break - though a number of players will come closer to fitness by the time league action restarts on October 10.

The Owls are moving through a three-week break after matches against Stevenage and Cambridge United were postponed due to international call-ups, though EFL Trophy matches are going ahead. The first of which saw Wednesday come from behind to win 2-1 at Salford City - the final minutes of which saw centre-half Gabriel Otegbayo locked in a battle with Ammies forward Ryan Graydon and came away with a niggle to show for it.

Speaking after the match, Owls boss Henrik Pedersen admitted that Otegbayo had suffered an issue but that it was too early to ascertain any seriousness. The Republic of Ireland youth cap was seen moving with a little discomfort after the game.

One injury The Star does understand to be of some concern to Wednesday is that of loanee forward Ali Al-Hamadi, who was taken out of the Iraq squad after one training session having missed the Owls’ draw with Stockport County with an ankle issue. Speaking earlier this week, Pedersen admitted more information was required before it was possible to commit to its seriousness.

“I need some more information about this before I can say anything,” said the Wednesday boss. Pushed on whether he could feature in the EFL Trophy clash with Sunderland’s under-21s, he replied: “Let’s see. I cannot say anything yet until I have more information.”

It is hoped that the likes of Sil Swinkels, Max Lowe and Jordi Liongola could come closer to contention by the time their clash at Huddersfield Town comes around, though Pedersen suggested they may be struggling for involvement at the Accu Stadium.

“They are doing really well,” he said. “Maybe Sil is a little bit further than Max but let’s see in the next one or two weeks whether they can come on the pitch."
