Former Sheffield Wednesday footballer banned from driving after being caught doing 100mph

Ian Poveda, who played 10 times for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, has been handed a driving ban

A former Sheffield Wednesday winger has been banned from driving for six months after he was caught speeding at 100mph.

Ian Poveda, who left Sunderland earlier this season in March, was stopped by a police officer who saw him speeding in a black Range Rovers on the A184 in South Tyneside at around 8.45am on Sunday 23 February 2025.

The two-time Colombia international, who failed to score in 10 appearances for the Owls during an unremarkable six-month loan spell at the end of the 2023/24 season, did not attend the hearing in North Tyneside’s Magistrates’ Court.

The Manchester City academy graduate already had six points on his licence due to three prior speeding offences, and after admitting the offence was handed a further six points and fined £800, with a £320 surcharge and £600 costs.

"It is clear the Range Rover was travelling well in excess of the speed limit,” said Brian Payne, prosecuting.

Mr Payne added: "I am going to suggest it was at about 100mph in a 70mph zone.”

Janice Hall, mitigating, argued her client's speeding had only been "for a very short period of time".

The 26-year-old footballer, who was born in Southwark, London, came through the academy system of Premier League heavyweights Manchester City and made one senior appearance for the Sky Blues during a 1-0 League Cup semi-final win over Burton Albion in 2019. He joined Leeds United in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa, but failed to establish himself as a first team regular at Elland Road during his four year stay, making 37 appearances across all competitions and just 25 in the league. He spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday at Championship level before joining Sunderland on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.

He played just six times at the Stadium of Light during last season’s successful promotion-winning campaign, but didn’t feature at all in the Premier League this term before departing mid-season. He currently plays for Internacional de Bogotá in the top division of Colombian football.
