Sheffield Wednesday could sign two free agents as squad option continues
Sheffield Wednesday’s squad rebuild is not over yet - on two fronts.
Sheffield Wednesday intend to take a look at the free agent market as they seek to land themselves the best squad possible heading into the bulk of the League One season - but will only move for quality.
At the time of writing the Owls are yet to confirm the loan addition of Wrexham attacker Davis Keillor-Dunn, who travelled to Sheffield on Tuesday evening just hours before the deadline after a ‘unique opportunity’ arose to get a deal completed ahead of the 11pm deadline.
The deal was done late towards the deadline and as of The Star’s latest understanding on Wednesday evening, efforts to get into a position to confirm the deal outright were still ongoing - with one source with knowledge of the deal suggesting its completion was subject to a clearance process.
Beyond the fate of the Keillor-Dunn switch, Owls boss Henrik Pedersen told The Star that Wednesday may well continue their efforts to add to the squad despite the passing of the deadline. FIFA rules allow clubs to sign free agents outside of a transfer window and the Owls have dipped into that option before, most recently signing Liam Cooper and Nathan Redmond outside a window period last season.
“Yes, we are searching the market to see if there could be one or two,” Pedersen said, speaking after the Owls’ win at Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday evening. “But yes I am looking forward to speaking with them (senior figures at the club) when we are coming in to see what is the situation.”
An exploration of the free agent market was one that Pedersen had hinted at last week as the deadline drew nearer. Recruitment staff at the club have already begun their work in drawing-up potential options should the club look to go in that direction. Unlike last season there is no desperation for numbers and more a focus on what quality can be brought to certain positions at the start of a long campaign.
“It's a difficult market sometimes,” Pedersen said. “But yes, we are searching all that we can, to see if there is someone who can help us and make us stronger. I'm really, really pleased with the squad we have. I think we have a strong squad. So it has to be a really good player if we have to do something.”
