The 30-year-old defender, who played 42 league games for Rotherham United in the last two campaigns, joined Wednesday over the summer, but suffered a serious injury back in November that has seen him spend many months on the sidelines.

He’s been back in training for a while now though, and was named in the matchday squad against Burton Albion over the weekend, however it was decided that he’d get minutes playing for the U21s on Tuesday night rather than make the trip to Bristol City.

Now, with Wednesday’s penultimate home game of the season coming up, Darren Moore has explained that he’s on the brink of getting back into the side – saying that he’ll be in contention v Exeter as long as there have been no issues with his knee following the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers.

“We left Icky behind,” Moore said. “He had 60/70 minutes with the U21s, so I’m delighted. We decided not to bring him - we gave him a matchday at Burton for him to get used to the surroundings again, and then he’s had minutes today (Tuesday) - by all accounts he’s come through the game ok, which is excellent for him.

“He’ll recover in the next couple of days and then join up with the main group - it’s important that he’s getting the match minutes, and with things like tonight with Akin it’s nice to know that he’s on the verge of coming back.”
