The attacker has made a move believed to be somewhere close to £500,000 from the cash-strapped Latics on a day that also saw the Owls announce the free transfer of former Huddersfield Town attacked Elias Kachunga.

Windass spent the latter stages of last season on loan at Hillsborough and scored three goals in nine injury-interrupted appearances.

Wednesday had a big rejected early on last month and almost two weeks on from an accepted bid, The Star has followed the move every step of the way.

The 26-year-old, who was released by Huddersfield as a teenager, has worked his way up through non-league football with provincial part-time outfit Harrogate Railway before being picked up by current Owls assistant manager James Beattie at Accrington Stanley.

A big move to Glasgow Rangers followed, before a £2.5m move to Wigan in 2018.

The Star understands that Wednesday fought off competition from two other clubs to sign the son of former Owls loanee Dean, who can play either as an attacking midfielder or as a forward.

Just days out from their Carabao Cup season opener at Walsall, the double swoop of Windass and Kachunga triples the number of forward options available to Owls boss Garry Monk, with Jordan RHodes lining up as the only senior striker in their pre-season draw with Leicester City over the weekend.
