Sheffield Wednesday making academy moves with fan favourite keen on return

Sheffield Wednesday are set to feel the winds of change from top to bottom this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to bring in new faces to their academy as part of their ground-up rebuild mission.

A replacement for Jordan Broadbent is being sought, with the Owls under-18s boss having moved on to take his first step into senior management with National League North side Buxton FC after a successful period in at Middlewood Road. The Owls are also looking for a new head of local recruitment to take on the identification and recruitment of young players in the region.

Broadbent’s departure leaves a major role to be filled, with a range of applications believed to have been made. Among those interested in the under-18s job is fan favourite ex-Owl Ross Wallace, who as reported by former Star reporter Dom Howson is keen to place his hat in the ring.

Wallace took Burnley’s women’s side to promotion last season and has previous coaching experience at Fleetwood Town, where he acted as a first team coach, and in roles in the Burnley academy. He will have worked alongside Wednesday academy chief Jonathan Pepper as their time in the Turf Moor youth set-up overlapped.

Wallace made 124 appearances for the Owls across three years and was a key part of the side that earned back-to-back Championship play-off qualification under Carlos Carvalhal.

The club’s new ownership are said to be taking a holistic look at the future of the academy. As previously reported by The Star, pressures on the set-up’s Category status are there, with changes required to push things back in the right direction. Amid limited space, among the considerations had are moving some of the academy’s activity to a different training base within the city - for the time being at least. Longer-term solutions are being weighed-up.
