It’s not an easy task for Monk and his side as they look to chase down a 12-point deficit from day one following their refent points deduction – and the manager needs new personnel after a raft of exits from S6.

While Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has come in, Monk’s also thought to be on the lookout for a centre back and a box-to-box midfielder among other positions, and strikers are in short supply as recent departures left Monk with just Jordan Rhodes up top.

Given the financial situation the Owls have found themselves in of late, we took a look at some free agents that could be worth looking at for SWFC – and there are plenty to choose from.

Mike van der Hoorn

Recently leaving Swansea City, the 27-year-old centre back is available as a free transfer after playing 30 games for the Swans in the Championship this past season. The Swans’ big dip in form coincided with his absence between December and June, and he’s not been snapped up yet.

At 31, Martin is no youngster, but he’s a player that could be seen as an ideal replacement for Steven Fletcher. He’s scored almost 100 Championship goals and assisted almost 50, and is available as a bit of a bargain after leaving Derby County. He played 35 league games in 2019/20, scoring 11 times.

Kamohelo Mokotjo

Mokotjo left Brentford after the Bees narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion, and the South African is now available as a free agent. Only eight players in the entire Championship had a better pass success rate last season (87.2%) and at 29 he’s still got years left in him yet.

After six years at Bristol City, their club captain is on his way out of the Robins and on the lookout for his next move. He’s 29, with a wealth of Championship experience (over 170 games at this level) and could be seen as a good squad player to beef up the Owls midfield.

Chey Dunkley

Dunkley, 28, recently left Wigan Athletic following their relegation out of the Championship. He’s played over 300 senior games, scoring an impressive 31 goals from centre back, including six for the Latics in 2019/20 as they were cruelly sent down following a 12-point deduction.

Daniel Ayala

The big Spaniard left Middlesbrough before last season finished knowing that he was going to be on the hunt for a new club in the new season, and he’s already been linked with the likes of Swansea. He’s 29, has experience in the Championship and Premier League, and has a goal in him too.

Jackson Irvine

The Australian international, with more than 30 caps to his name, won’t be going down to League One with Hull City, and could be an astute signing for anyone hoping to bring in a versatile centre midfielder. He’s still 27, and has 30 goals and assists to his name in 152 Championship appearances.
