Paterson, 25, should have been one of two Owls that were part of Steve Clarke’s Tartan Army for two big games against Israel and Slovakia respectively, firstly in a 2020 European Championship Play-Off, and then in a UEFA Nations League tie.

But unfortunately for Liam Palmer, the long-serving Owls academy graduate had to pull out of the squad due to a back spasm, meaning that he was forced to watch from home rather than take part.

Paterson, meanwhile, featured in both the 0-0 draw with Israel (which they won on penalties) and the 1-0 win over Slovakia, coming on from the bench in both games as Clarke looked to secure a result.

The new SWFC signing, who made his debut in the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers, played around 35 minutes in total over the course of the two games, having 15 touches and making 11 passes – he also won three aerial battles.

Wednesday’s latest addition spoke before the games the pride he felt while playing for his nation, and certainly wasn’t afraid to fight for the cause with a number of fouls and a yellow card in the time that he was on the field.

Next up for Paterson and his Scottish teammates is a third consecutive home game at Hampden Park, this time against the Czech Republic, and he’ll be eager to get some more minutes under his belt as he continues to seek his first international goal.
