It’s been a turbulent time at Hillsborough for Monk since his arrival, with last year’s impressive start being followed by a big drop in form and then a 12-point deduction to start off the current campaign.

Following the end of the 2019/20 season, Monk was backed thoroughly by Chansiri and the Owls management, both in terms of the players that were brought in, but also the recruitment of his technical team - including James Beattie, Darryl Flahavan and Andrew Hughes.

Speaking to Alan Biggs and Sheffield Live about that support, Monk said, "I appreciate that support hugely... I am lucky that I had that communication with him throughout, even when things were going well.

"Even in the first half of the season, I could see certain things that might be a problem coming ahead.

"I didn't see the form dipping how it did in the second half of the season, but I saw problems even when we were third at Christmas. So I already had those things in my mind.

"But having had those conversations, even when things were going well, the club can see that it isn't just because we've had a bad period and now I'm saying 'this is wrong' and 'this is wrong'... I was talking about those things even in the good period.

"That's what you do as a manager, you assess what needs to be done, having had that communication early on - him seeing that brings that trust.”

He’s not without pressure though, of course. And that’s something that he’s very aware of during what is set to be a tough campaign.

"The demand is there to win every game you can play in,” he said. To have an owner that's shown support like he has, of course I'm very grateful and also very happy for that.

"I think they can all see how hard we’re working and what we're trying to do... Of course you don't have an endless amount of time but hopefully I can show what I want to do and move this club in the right direction.

"We face a big handicap this season and it's probably one of the hardest seasons the club has faced in many, many years.

"There has to be a realisation of that. We realise that and I think our fans realise that."

Monk and his coaches have now got a bit of time to further instil their ways into the players given the international break, with their next game - against his former club, Birmingham City - only taking place on October 17th.

Wednesday do have a host of injuries at present, with the likes of Dominic Iorfa and Izzy Brown missing the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers, however the break also gives them a chance to recover in time to return to action in the next game.
