Port Vale midfielder, Gavin Massey, says his side should not fear Sheffield Wednesday when they make their first trip to Hillsborough since 2005.

The Owls play host to the Valiants this evening as they look to make it 12 games without defeat in League One, but the visitors will be full of confidence after they beat Morecambe 1-0 on Boxing Day courtesy of Massey’s winner.

Massey, formerly of Wigan Athletic, thinks that they have got what it takes to cause Darren Moore’s side some problems, and recounted the fact that they were only narrowly beaten back in October by what he called a ‘flukey’ goal from Will Vaulks.

“We’ve played big teams, big teams have come here and we’ve given everything,” he told the club’s YouTube channel. “We’ve gone to away grounds and we’ve won. It’s no different.

Sheffield Wednesday are a massive club, but the boys should go in there with no fear. At the end of the day it’s 11 men on the pitch.

“They beat us 1-0 with a flukey goal here. It’s going to be tough, they’ve got the fans backing, they’ve got quality, and we all know that, but hopefully if we graft and grind then you never know what could happen.”

The Vale are bringing an impressive following of over 3,000 fans to Hillsborough for the final game of 2022, but the hosts will be out to make sure that they don’t have too enjoyable afternoon as Moore’s team look to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games in the third tier.
