Sheffield Wednesday striker set for surgery and will likely miss pre-season

Wednesday forward Brown is in a race to be fit for next season due to injury

Young Owls striker George Brown is unlikely to be fit for pre-season ahead of the League One campaign.

The forward, 20, who has shown plenty of promise, scoring two goals in seven Championship appearances, was edging closer to making a return to action after being ruled out since December. But the prospect suffered a setback during his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury and is now going to be out for three or four months. He is set to have surgery next week on the injury which happened in the gym after training.

Henrik Pedersen told The Star: “George is very, very tough and very, very sad. When you have seen him on the pitch the last month, how hard he has been working and how much he has looked forward to playing again.

“It is sad and it is tough for him, but I know he will come through that and he will come through. But now we are waiting for the next step and he will have a surgery in his hamstring, I think, next week. Then we will do everything we can to support him in the best possible way so he will come back stronger again.”

Brown’s teammates and club staff have been rallying around him as they aim to keep him positive during a challenging time.

“We do everything and his teammates are also there for him,” Pedersen said. “We know how hard he has been working and how much respect he has for everything here and how hungry he is to deliver something good for Sheffield Wednesday. So, of course, we are there to support him.”

With the 2026/2027 season set to start in August, Brown is unlikely to be fit for the start of pre-season and it might be even longer before he is back in an Owls shirt.

Pedersen confirmed: “I think nothing is realistic to be fit for the pre-season. I think it will take longer time for him. I think he is one of the young, unknown boys who came up and did really well. We have positive expectations for him, also for the future. Now we need to make a step back again, to make a step forward later. We are all looking forward to him coming back again and can be a part because he has a lot to give for our squad.”
