The 41-year-old was part of a reshuffle at Wednesday that also saw Andrew Hughes and James Beattie enter the first-team fray ahead of the squad’s return to training. He is busy ruling the roost over Cameron Dawson, Joe Wildsmith and Josh Render in the goalkeeping department of their camp at Loughborough University.

And speaking to the official club website, Flahavan expressed his delight at signing for the Owls before making clear his belief in Garry Monk’s ability to lead the transition he has said he so desperately need.

“I've worked with Garry at Leeds, Middlesbrough, Birmingham and now here. He's a fantastic guy, a great manager and I love coming in to work with him every day. James, Hughesy, Ryan as well, I'm getting to know a lot of other people here as well. I can't wait for the season to start.”

Together with new assistant boss Beattie, Flahavan has worked closely with Monk for many years and the trio go back to their days coming through together as youngsters at Southampton.

“I've known Garry for a long time, we played with one another at Southampton and we've known each other for a while,” he said.

“We know each other inside out, we're very professional, especially on the grass and when we want to get a message across to the players. But we also know when to enjoy it and we have a good camaraderie with the staff as well, which I think is key to create that environment.

“I've worked with some very good managers as a player and a coach and Garry is right up there with them. He's a fantastic man manager and tactically he's great so hopefully this season we can make it successful.”
