More injury concerns for Sheffield Wednesday after FA Cup defeat to Oldham Athletic
The Owls were in FA Cup action at Boundary Park on Sunday
Sheffield Wednesday’s FA Cup defeat to Oldham Athletic in Dave Challinor’s first game as manager came with injury concerns.
The Owls lost 2-1 in extra-time in the FA Cup first round at Boundary Park on Sunday evening. Wednesday fell behind on 66 minutes when Calum Kavanagh finished high into the net from inside the area. But Davis Keillor-Dunn turned and fired in an equaliser against his old club 10 minutes later after good work by substitutes Max Lowe and then Sean Fusire.
There was a moment of madness from Latics boss Micky Mellon, who was sent off in the latter stages after an ugly altercation with Callum Slattery, who was booked for his part in the incident.
The match went to extra-time and Will Sutton struck the winner from close-range in the 110th minute after some scruffy defending from the visitors. Di’Shon Bernard lashed narrowly wide late on and Will Grainger had a chance blocked but Oldham held on to book their place in the second round.
Mason Burstow was not involved in the squad and Challinor revealed the striker is set for a spell on the sidelines. “He got injured in the Blackpool game, so he's going to be four to six weeks,” he said. “I think he’s tweaked a groin with the shot he had from the halfway line.”
Harry Gray was initially named in the squad but pulled out during the warm-up and was replaced by George Brown. “It happened yesterday,” Challinor explained. “Harry got a whack on the hip and has obviously tried to go out and do the warm- up and was unable to run. It's a soft tissue one. It's not serious one. We were hoping he was going to be involved today. Harry would have been an important one for us.”
Bernard appeared to pull up towards the end of extra-time but Challinor did not appear too concerned and stated his importance to the team in terms of how they want to play.
“He's the one that has no excuses in terms of Dish hasn't completed 90 minutes,” Challinor said. “So when you're coming back from injury, especially long-term injury, there's always little hurdles that you have to get over. He'll be sore tonight. He'll be sore all over. But again, a big positive thing that ticked off for him. So, fingers crossed with him.”
Goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer was forced off early in the first-half after colliding with Mike Fondop and he had to be replaced by Connal Trueman.
And on Maynard-Brewer, Challinor added: “Just feeling feeling a little bit ill. Obviously there was collision so we will see what that looks like.”
