Dave Challinor delivers 'bare minimum' demand as Sheffield Wednesday notes say it all
Dave Challinor watched on as his Sheffield Wednesday side were dumped out of the FA Cup at Oldham Athletic.
A vocal Dave Challinor cut a frustrated figure for much of his first outing as Sheffield Wednesday boss - as his side fell out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 extra-time defeat at League Two Oldham Athletic.
The result served as the first time the 51-year-old had lost his first match in charge of a side and delivered a reminder of the issues that need ironing out for a side now on a run of one win in nine outside of the Jersey Mike’s Trophy. Challinor was seen making notes on the performance, with TNT Sports cameras picking up a tone matching that of his bellows onto the field.
“Really frustrating and disappointing not to win,” Challinor said on his reaction to the performance. “First off it was like a testimonial, miles too slow. Nothing like a team that I want to look like, which I can I can maybe sort of accept a little bit.
“Second half was much better. We were probably having our best spell when we conceded. We responded really, really well and the subs came on and changed the dynamic of the game. It would been great to be able to start in that manner or with that personnel, but we were unable to unable to do so.
“And then I suppose there's always there's been a problem in terms of conceding goals. We've conceded two really, really soft goals and that has to stop.”
Returning to his former ground, loanee Davis Keillor-Dunn forced the game into extra-time with his equaliser but Wednesday failed to convert 71% possession into a number of chances and were unable to prevent two poor concessions through Calum Kavanagh and Will Sutton.
“The two goals, you can't get away from them,” Challinor said. “Really, really, really bad goals. And regardless of what league you play and who you play against, you have to compete. The behaviors that the players spoke about before I was even in the building are out-compete, outrun, outfight, outplay. You have to do that as a minimum, regardless of what that looks like.
“We'll have to do that against against Plymouth on Saturday, and without being disrespectful to Oldham, they (Plymouth) are a better team, that's the case. You have to do that as a as a bare minimum. You've got to get miles better at doing that. Otherwise, the stuff on the ball won’t count.”
Across 120 minutes and once again given a huge share of the possession, Wednesday gathered an xG of only 0.68 and registered only 23 touches in the opposition box. The Owls boss suggested there has to be a greater bravery to how Wednesday go about things in possession - and that it is up to the coaching staff to drag them from a ‘comfort zone’ he feels they have inherited.
“The players have got to take themselves outside the comfort zone,” he said. “Maybe they've been in that for too long, but it's our job to get them out of it. You look at the the second half in terms of what it looked like and it looked a whole lot better, a whole lot more of what I want a Sheffield Wednesday team to look like. There are bits in the final third that we can work on in terms of areas, some some great bits at play where we get down the side. It's that last bit. We've got to look at where we've got bodies.
“But we've got to be able to do that for 90 minutes, 120 minutes at the moment. By the looks of what today looks like, we can't do that now. There are, I suppose, extenuating circumstances with with some players. We're short on short on numbers, but there's no excuse for that. “
