Key transfer dates for Sheffield Wednesday and rivals confirmed by EFL
Several new signings are expected at The Owls this summer
Key transfer dates for Sheffield Wednesday and their League One rivals have been confirmed.
A huge summer of change is expected at The Owls as they aim to rebuild the club from top to bottom following a turbulent last 12 months which saw the club plunged into administration and relegated in record time before David Storch and Arise Capital Partners came to their rescue.
Recruitment will be a big priority, with virtually a new squad needed. New chief executive officer, David Bruce, said their approach to the transfer market will be aggressive, quick and smart. He is keen for them to take the opportunities that present themselves and stressed they need to start executing their plans.
Wednesday are expected to go down the ‘young and hungry’ route as they aim to develop players and create value. But, as was shown when they won promotion from the same division in 2023, experience in key positions will also be required.
Following administration, The Owls have restrictions placed on them for a season or two, but Bruce confirmed they do not relate to wages and they can sign players again, which was not always the case last season. Bruce added that they are not ‘worried’ by the restrictions and understand they need to build some ‘trust’ back up with the EFL.
Manager Henrik Pedersen and his coaching staff have analysed data from the last five years in League One in an attempt to better understand what it takes to be successful in the the third-tier. That research has included picking the brains of those at current champions Lincoln City.
The EFL has now confirmed the dates for the summer and winter transfer windows in the 2026/27 season:
- The summer window will open on Monday, June 15 and close at 11pm on Tuesday, September 1
- The winter window will open on Friday, January 1 2027 and close at 11pm on Monday, February 1 2027
The January transfer window closed at 7pm this year but has switched back to the later time of 11pm. The fixtures for the 2026/2027 season will be released at 12noon on Thursday, June 25. The Carabao Cup first round starts over the weekend 7-9 August and the League One campaign gets underway 14-16 August.
