Josh Windass Rangers transfer report highlights Dejphon Chansiri's downfall at Sheffield Wednesday
Josh Windass played for The Owls for five seasons
Josh Windass is being linked with a reunion with Danny Rohl at Rangers again.
Windass, 32, played under Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday and said he was the best tactical manager he had worked with. Windass enjoyed one of the most productive campaigns of his career in the 2024/2025 term when Rohl was in charge, notching 13 goals and five assists, as The Owls threatened to secure a Championship play-off spot under the German but fell short.
Windass left Wednesday last summer and signed for Wrexham. It is believed he handed in his notice - which he was entitled to do - after going consecutive months without receiving his wages during a chaotic period under former club owner Dejphon Chansiri. Windass was at Wednesday for five seasons, scoring half a century of goals, including a last-gasp winner at Wembley against Barnsley in the 2023 League One play-off final, but Chansiri’s financial position meant he was able to leave for free.
Wrexham missed out on the Championship play-offs on the final day of this season. Windass netted 15 times and grabbed six assists but it was not enough for the Welsh side to make the top six. That disappointment could prove costly following reports that Rangers have made a ‘fresh approach’ for Windass, who has played for the Ibrox club before and was linked with them in January.
Windass still has two years remaining on a three-year contract at the Racecourse Ground so any switch would require a fee. With Wrexham in a comfortable financial position they are not under any pressure to sell. Any move could prove to be tempting for Windass, though, given how highly he thinks of Rohl, describing him as the best tactically ‘by a mile.’
“The detail is like nothing I've ever seen before to be honest,” he said previously. “He'll do the match plan before the game. Off the ball pressing, mid-third pressing, building up from a goal kick, building up from the mid-third and the positions you should be in. The Monday after we've played the game, he'll get the exact same images up and make sure that we all followed the match plan. If you haven't he'll ask you and that's when you'll see.”
